I have always like collecting modern error coins. Modern coins are defined by many numismatists as coins dated from 1965 to present.
I began collecting error coins around the year 2000. At that time, the mint was producing vast mintages and a large amount of errors coins were escaping the mint. I became fascinated with the endless major errors you could buy at the time at a very reasonable price. I got used to viewing only mint state error coins. Occasionally, a classic major error coin would come available, but usually it would be circulated, sometimes damaged and most had poor eye appeal.
I found the pricing on classic error coins to be very high. I could get so much more with modern error coinage. I would buy dramatic mint state error coins for a fraction of the price of a similar classic error coin. Modern error coins also offer errors that would be impossible on classic coins such as cladding and plating errors. If you want a dramatic mint state error coin collection at an affordable price, you may want to consider modern mint error coins.
What I like about modern mint error coins is that you can extreme examples, like the error below, at reasonable prices.
1993 PCGS MS64/63 Mated Pair Double Struck
Nickel Mint Error
Wow Rare 2 Coin Set
A mated pair error on classic coinage would be extremely expensive. Modern error coins are a way of getting very rare error type coins at a good price.

Missing clad layer errors can only be found on modern coins. Bright red copper contrasts nicely with obverse nickel clad layer.
1980 NGC MS66 Lincoln Cent Struck On Struck Dime
Double Denomination Mint Error
Double denomination errors will always be expensive. This one has amazing eye appeal and would be considerable less than an equally high end double denomination error on a classic coin.
