A favorite of every error coin collector is to have a double struck error coin in their collection. Double struck coins can be die struck on both sides. It can also be struck with another coin or a blank planchet resulting in a brockage or indent on one side of the double struck coin.
The most common type of collectable double struck coin is when first strike is on center and the second strike is off center. Other types of double struck error coins could be a flip over double struck coin, rotated in collar double struck error, or both strikes off center. Other examples are overlapping double struck coins with the more dramatic types being an overlapping double strike on a large broadstruck error.
Double struck error coins are usually one of the first types of errors a new error coin collector will acquire. Double struck error coins come in all price ranges depending on eye appeal, placement of strikes, rareness of date, and denomination. Coins that are double dated with two full dates are the most sought after of the double strikes. Double struck coins that are double headed with two profiles are also preferred. Some double strikes even have two dates and two profiles increasing the eye appeal.
Most numismatists appreciate double struck error coins and some non-error coin collectors may even have a double struck error as the only example of a major error coin in their collection.
