Unique 1896 Liberty Head Nickel Obverse Die Cap Flip-Over Double Strike
This is a spectacular and unique Liberty Head nickel die cap. It was struck at least once and flipped over in the collar and was struck again. It remained in the collar and stuck to the obverse die, becoming an obverse die cap. Subsequent planchets entered the striking chamber and were struck by this die cap.
The obverse of the planchets struck by the reverse of this die cap will show a brockage that has the incuse design of both the obverse design (Liberty Head portrait) and the reverse design (V and wreath) since it was a flip-over.
The date 1896 is clearly visible on the side of the die cap and was wrapped around the obverse die as it created brockages on the obverse of the planchets.
This obverse die cap is very deep, in superb mint state condition and was authenticated and certified MS 66 by NGC. It is a world class major mint error and belongs in the finest collection of Liberty Head nickels or major mint errors.
It is featured on the cover of Mint Error News Magazine Issue 94 along with another spectacular and unique Liberty Head nickel obverse die cap, a 1906 struck on an Indian Head cent planchet.
